The wind of change
Once in a while we all need to escape our buzzing lives and sail away, not to forget about everything but to remind us who we truly are and what we are capable of. Let's put it this way sailing a boat is no joke, but there is nothing better than feeling the wind in your hair and being surrounded by the deep blue ocean. It is overwhelming.
There is something unique about it, the rush it gives you as well as a pure feeling of joy. You master the waves, learn how to tame the wind and choose a path. For a moment, you are in charge of your own destiny and this is priceless.
After a short flight from Sydney to Proserpine, we finally arrived at destination: Airlie Beach, known as the hub of the Whitsundays. We were told about how busy it would be especially during peak season, but against all odds we found the city quite quiet. The Whitsundays are composed of 74 islands located in the heart of the Great Barrier reef, and we all wanted a breathtaking experience into the world's largest coral reef. On top of having the time of our lives we also learnt so much about this UNESCO World's heritage site. Due to global warming most of the reef is bleaching and could go extinct, which raises long term concerns for our marine ecosystem.

The Whitsundays offers only guided tours, as this is a protected area you cannot rent your own boat and sail as you wish. This is something to keep in mind when organising your trip. Make sure to book in advance and fill in your schedule accordingly.
We decided to book two different day cruises around the whitsundays, a north and a south tour. Regardless of what you will pick, you will be blown away by the vastness of the place. We stopped by the world famous Whitehaven beach, the largest beach of the islands, and had the best time snorkeling along the reef. It was really impressive as the reef where we stopped was quite far from the coast which can be intimidating, but as soon as you jump into the water, you realise how fortunate you are.
